L. Smith, 81, Dies Monday At Pontchatoula Rites for Prominent Winnfield Resident Conducted Tuesday Funeral services were held here Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. for Mrs. Jane Lee Smith, 81, of Winnfield, who died in the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. L. Ladner, at Ponchatoula at 12:40 p.m. Monday. Rites were conducted at the family residence on Wright Street by the Rev. H. H. McBride, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Winnfield; the Rev. Dr. R. Houston Smith, First Baptist Church of Pineville; the Rev. H. J. Mott, Laurel Heights Baptist Church, and Rev. Calvin M. Robinson, Assembly of God Church of Winnfield. Interment was in the Big Creek Cemetery near Pollock. Pallbearers included A. Leonard Allen, Ovey Trahan, J. L. Corley, E. L. McGuffee, Miley Walsworth, and J. F. Walker. A native of Seminary, Miss., Mrs. Smith was married to William Leonard Smith in 1885, and they moved to Winnfield from Grant Parish 43 years ago. She was preceded in death by her husband, who passed away on May 31, 1947 at the age of 82. Mrs. Smith was a direct descendant of General Robert E. Lee and was a sister of the late Colonel Swords R. Lee of Alexandria. She had been a member of the Baptist Church since her girlhood and was affiliated with the First Baptist Church here for many years and was an active member until she became ill several years ago. She is survived by four sons, A. L. Smith, Sr., of Winnfield, Henry H. Smith of Monroe, L. Houston Smith of Winnfield, and James I. Smith of New Orleans; one daughter, Mrs. A. L. Ladner of Ponchatoula, and nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. (Submitted by Greggory Ellis Davies, Winnfield, Winn Parish, LA.)
