All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** WINNFIELD NEWS-AMERICAN, Winnfield, Louisiana, Friday, March 25, 1927 Mrs. Rhoda Smith Dies; One of Oldest Families of Parish Mrs. Rhoda Smith, mother of Pat Smith, merchant, of this city, died Thursday, March 17, following a stroke of apoplexy from which she was found the day before lying unconscious in the yard at the home of her daughter Mrs. J.H. Lewis, whom she had gone to visit. Mrs. Smith who made her home with her son, Charlie Smith, Route 2 was a member of one of the oldest families of the parish being a daughter of William and Elizabeth Bevill Porter who came to the parish in the early fifties. Mrs. Smith was born in Alabama in 1844 and was 82 years, 2 months, and 5 days of age at the time of her death. She was a strong influential christian and a faithful member of the Corinth Baptist Church. Mrs. Smith was twice married. First to Mr. Jasper Morrel, who died during the Civil War and second to Mr. Patrick Smith who died in June 1908. Besides her eight children who were at her bedside when death came she is survived by 52 grandchildren, 48 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. Her children are, Darius Smith, who lives near Winnfield, Jim Smith, Charlie Smith, Route 2, Winnfield, Patrick Smith, merchant of Winnfield, Mrs. Lizzie Long, Mrs. Alice Lewis, Mrs. Margie Bartley, and Mrs. Missouri Dawson.
