W. Smith Dies At Sikes, Friday, Jan. 25 Funeral Services for Well Known Lady Held Saturday Final rites for Mrs. Tennessee Smith, 67, were held at the Baptist Church at Sikes last Saturday, January 26. The Rev. R. L. Camel of Oak Grove officiated. Burial was in the Sikes Cemetery. Mrs. Smith was a native of Winn Parish, the daughter of the late Chris James. She married P. W. Smith in 1902, and they lived at Sikes since that time. Nine years ago, Mrs. Smith began canning tomatoes from the crops of her neighbors, and the enterprise grew until she was canning 35,000 cans per year and employing about 35 persons during the season. Her death came Friday, January 25, as a shock to her many friends and acquaintances. Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband, two sons, Stanley Smith of Sikes and Wayland Smith of Oak Grove, and five grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Ellen Sowers of Winnfield and Mrs. Sydnie Dark of San Antonio, Texas; and two brothers, Henry and Jesse James of Oak Grove. Pallbearers were John James of Columbia, Hardy James of Monroe, Lonny James of Oak Grove, Eugene Smith, Stacey Smith, and Delmer Smith of Sikes.
