S. 84. Dead is Morris A. Smith, 51, who lived at the Brickyard Quarters. His wife, Mable Smith, 77, suffered a broken jaw and a broken leg and his daughter, Mary, 16, underwent surgery for an injured foot. The injured were taken to Natchitoches Parish Hospital by the hospital ambulance. Funeral services for Smith are pending at the Winnfield Funeral Home in Natchitoches pending the arrival of one of his sons, Sgt. Archie Smith, serving with the Air Force in Vietnam. Investigating officers said the point of impact was three feet over the center line in the eastbound lane. The Smith car was traveling west on 84 and a '64 Ford, driven by Odell Woods, 28, also of Winnfield, was going east on the same highway. According to witnesses, Woods made an attempt to pull into a liquor store driveway, saw the approaching Smith vehicle and cut back into his lane. Smith apparently tried to avoid the Woods vehicle and they hit head-on. While obtaining the driver's license of Woods, officers found a pistol in his pocket. He was charged with carrying a concealed weapon. Morris Smith, who was employed at the American Creosote Works in Winnfield, has been a Winnfield resident since World War II. He is survived by his wife, and daughter, Mary; and four sons, Morris, Jr., James Smith, Edward Smith, all of Winnfield, and Sgt. Archie Smith, Vietnam.
