Man Dies In Plane Crash

Mervin Otto Smith, 38 year old operator of Tullos Oil Co. in Tullos, has been
reported killed in a plane crash in California.  He lived in Olla.

Authorities said Smith's Cessna 170 crashed 1000 yards after takeoff from the
Santa Maria, Calif., airport.  Weather was foggy.

He was enroute to Las Vegas, Nev., where his wife, Mary, was hospitalized
after giving birth to their fourth child.

Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Smith, Sr., Ball, a brother,
Dr. J. E. Smith, Shreveport, and a brother, Richard Smith, of Alexandria.
