L. Smith To Be Held Friday At 3 P.M. Last rites for Albert Lee Smith, 69 years, 7 months, and 7 days of age, who died in a local hospital at 5 a.m. Thursday, July 12, will be held in the First Baptist Church at 3 p.m. Friday. The pastor, Rev. W. L. Holcomb, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Winnfield Cemetery. Mr. Smith suffered a heart attack July 5. Cause of death was coronary thrombosis. Retired in October, 11954 from the Tremont & Gulf Railway, where he had served for 45 years as general manager and vice president, Mr. Smith since then has been manager of the Independent Ice Company in Winnfield. For 25 years he has been a director of the Bank of Winnfield. He has been active throughout his lifetime in civic and religious circles. He was a member of First Baptist Church and its various organizations. For 10 years he was a member of the parish school board, eight of which he served as its president. He also served several terms as a member of the town council. Mr. Smith was a 32nd degree Mason, a Shriner, and a member of the Commander and Knights Templar. He was active in the organization of the Winnfield Lions Club and at present is International Counselor of Lions. Keenly interested in politics, Mr. Smith recently was named Colonel of the staff of Governor Earl K. Long. In prior years he had been named Colonel and Aide-de-Camp on the staffs of Governors James A. Noe, Dick Leche, Jimmy Davis, and O. K. Allen, and also a Colonel on Gov. Long's staff in the first administration. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Ottice Barnes Smith, and one daughter, Mrs. Harwell Allen, both of Winnfield; two sons, Leonard Smith, Tyler, Texas; Albert Smith, Jr., Baton Rouge; three brothers, Houston Smith, Winnfield; Henry Smith, Monroe; and James I. Smith, New Orleans; one sister, Mrs. A. L. Ladner of Ponchatoula, who is now on a tour of Europe. Mr. Smith was born in Grant Parish but had lived most of his lifetime in Winnfield. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Smith, prominent residents of Winnfield.
