Throughout the 80 years of her long and eventful life, her influential Christian character has impressed all that knew her. With gentleness and charm she was queen in her own home and dearly beloved by her husband and children; and her friends and acquaintances knew of her devoutly earnest love of God and the church. Cleaving to all that was great and good, and abhorring evil in all things, her faith in the teachings of the Bible, and in her fellow man were supreme. So sincere was her belief that the way never became too dark for herself or others but that she could find Devine comfort from the reading of a chapter and the kneeling in prayer to the Deity, with which she seemed to have the closest touch. Her love and support of the church and its ministers was the vital importance in her life and yet her worship was lived every day in her home. Communion with God and deeply religious feeling were synonymous to her very being. Her religion was something to be lived and her complete knowledge of Celestial guidance and care was inspiring. Kindness and generosity to all those who were fortunate was indicative of her truly aristocratic character. Her credence of faith plus work made her home a home to many. Hundreds have felt her prayers, love, and sympathy. The admiration and respect of countless friends manifest her sterling worth. Ever clinging to the purest and highest things of life, her faith in achievement are justified in her children, grandchildren, and her great grandchildren who cherish the memory of this sainted southern woman. Louvinia Hyde Smith was born May 12th, 1856, in Montgomery, Ala, the eldest daughter of the 14 children of Hartwell and Sarah Little Hyde. She was cognizant of the Civil War times and clear was her memory of events from pioneering days to our modern era. Early, she became a member of the Southern Methodist Church. As a young girl she married Philip Smith, 16 years her senior, and a descendant of Captain John Smith. Mr. Smith preceded her in death 12 years. Surviving are two brothers, Frank and Albert Hyde, one sister, Mrs. M. M. Fisher. Mrs. Smith was the mother of eight children, two of which died young, another in maturity. Of the five who remain are Mesdames A. L. McDonald, Winnfield; C. J. Bullard, Shreveport; R. J. Irvin, Houston, Texas; A. Goodwin, New Orleans; and one son, D. P. Smith, Shreveport, La.
