Smith of Sikes, who would have been 100 years old next July 28, 1944 died at his home Tuesday as a result of influenza. He was the oldest resident of Winn Parish and was patriarch of the large Smith clan ______________. He was the father of eight children, four of whom survive, the grandfather of 27, the great grandfather of 65, and the great-great grandfather of ___. Mr. Smith was married to Miss Lucretia Batten(?) and they lived together 61 years, she preceding him in death by 16 years. He was a member of the Baptist Church for more than 60 years and was a Mason. A native of Mississippi he came to Winn Parish while still a small boy. He was a Confederate veteran and was captured by the Union forces at Vicksburg. His brother, Percy Smith, died last year at the age of 94, and his sister, Mrs. Ann Campbell, who is 97, resides in Winnfield now. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Mineral Springs Church with the Rev. Joe Adams of Sikes, the Rev. Byrd of Urania, and W. T. Norman and Judge Cas Moss of Winnfield eulogizing the deceased. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. R. E. McCarty and Mrs. Lucy Jane Meredith of Sikes; two sons, P. W. and R. P. Smith, of Sikes; and his sister of Winnfield.
