All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: October 27, 1923 Shreveport Times (I think) Veteran Deputy Sheriff and Old Soldier Dies Special to the Times Winnfield, Oct. 27. - Joseph Smith, 89 years old, a confederate soldier, long time deputy sheriff of Winn Parish, and well known citizen, died Wednesday at Goldonna and was buried here under the charge of his sons. Mr. Smith's death leaves but three living out of the 27th Louisiana infantry of the confederate army, Tom B. Durham of Winnfield, J. B. Durham of Shreveport, and a man named Armstrong who resides in Washington state. Mr. Smith was criminal deputy for the late J. N. DeLoach, former sheriff of Winn, and later served sheriffs following, establishing a long record for bringing in the most unruly criminals. His acquaintance reached far from his home, due to his association with officers and politicians. He was the oldest republican in the parish and remained faithful to the party until the end. His children living are Bird and Martin Smith of this parish. His wife died many years ago.
