W. Smith Is Buried At Sikes Friday Afternoon Well Known Citizen of Winn Parish Succumbs January 25, 1940 Mrs. P. W. Smith, 67 years of age, died at her home in Sikes, Thursday, January 25, 1940, having been in ill health a number of years. She had recently been a patient in an Alexandria hospital. Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon at the Sikes Baptist Church with the Rev. Campbell of Oak Grove and the Rev. John Kitchingham of Columbia officiating. Interment was in the Sikes Cemetery. Acting as pallbearers were W. L. Sowers of Winnfield, Hardy James of Monroe, Lonnie James of Oak Grove, Jean Smith, Stacy Smith, and Delmar Smith of Sikes, all nephews of the deceased. Born on February 14, 1873, as Tennessee James, the daughter of the late Chris and Sarah James, pioneer citizens of Winn Parish. Mrs. Smith was reared in the same community in which she was born, and lived her entire life within a short distance from this point. Mrs. Smith was known far and wide because of her industrious nature and her business ability. For 20 or more years she managed a general mercantile business at Sikes. When the depression came she engaged in canning surplus tomatoes and other farm products on a large scale that created employment for many people in her community. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Sikes Baptist Church and the home demonstration club and was active in the work of both until her health failed. She was married to P. W. Smith in 1902 and they had two sons. She is survived by her husband and sons, Stanley of Sikes, and Wayland of Oak Grove, and five grandchildren. She also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Ellen Sowers of Winnfield and Mrs. Sidney A. Dark of San Antonio, Texas, and two brothers, Henry and Jesse James of Oak Grove.
