William Lane Smylie Former Winnfield Jounalist Dies Editor of The Comrade For Several Years. Active At Age 84 Funeral services of Col. W. L. Smylie, 84 years old, editor of the Coperas Cove Crony, Copperas Cove, Texas, who died Thursday Junly 26th, were Friday, July 27 and the body was interred inteh Copperas cove cemetery in the presence of mouring relatives and friends. The Rev. Lewis Dewald of that city conducted the services. The following was taken from the Copperas Cove Crony of August 3rd. W. L. Smylie Dies Uncle Bill Smylie is dead. he passed to his reward Thursday. He is gone but not forgotten. William Lane Smylie was born January 22, 1844 at Jackson, Mississippi and died at Copperas cove, Texas at the age of 84 years, 6 months, and 4 days. Mr. Smylie was the son of James B. Smylie, who died while William was in his youth. Mr. Smylie was married to Miss Rosa Parker in 1871 and to this union three children were born. He is survived by an estranged wife and two daughters and several grandchildren. He was editing a newspaper for his niece and was in active work three days before his passing. In 1862 he became a member of the Methodist Church and he was an active member in all its work until several years ago when he became practically disabled in his legs. At the age of 14 he became an apprentice to lear the printing trade and at 17 he joined the Confederate Army. He was wounded twice during the four years he served. After the war he worked as a printer. He owned several newspapers over the Southern States. In 1926, at the death of his nephew, he took charge of the Copperas Cove Crony for the nephew's wife Mrs. W. B. Smylie, to which he devoted his time. The pallbearers were: Oscar Petrey, Ed Norman, Roy Crabb, Elias Owens, Jr., W. P. Gibson, and Jouett Allin. Col. Smylie will be remembered by many of the Winnfield citizens as editor of The Comrade, one of the papers in the ancestral line of the News-American. During his editorship he made many friends here who mourn the passing of this veteran journalist.
