Douglas Hershal Sowers, 22, was killed in action in Korea on February 1, 1953, according to a war department telegram this week to his mother, Mrs. Maudy Sowers of Sikes. Pvt. Sowers was on ground patrol duty at the time he was killed. He enlisted on October 10, 1951, and went overseas in June of 1951. In July he was sent to the front lines and had been in action since that date. He was serving with the 25th Infantry Division. Pvt. Sowers is the fourth Winn Parish soldier killed in the Korean action. Others killed are Sgt. Robert Lee Hammond of Winnfield, Pvt. Henry Brew, colored, of Winnfield, Clifton Weyerman, son of Ethel Ingles, has been missing since 1951. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Helen Thompson of Sikes, and his mother, Mrs. Maudy Sowers. A later message stated that Pvt. Sowers' body was being returned to the States for burial. No. 2 Rites For Douglas Sowers, Killed In Korea, Saturday Funeral services for Pvt. Douglas Sowers, Korean war casualty, will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Thompson Baptist Church near Sikes. Pvt. Sowers was killed in Korea, February 1, while serving on front line duty with the Army. His is the son of Mrs. Maudie Sowers and the late Wade Sowers of Sikes. The body will arrive in Winnfield Thursday night. Funeral arrangements will be under direction of Southern Funeral Home.
