Sowers, 1956, Winn Parish, LA Funeral Services For John Sowers Held February 19 Last rites for John W. Sowers, 71, who died in a local hospital Saturday, at 3:20 a.m. after a long illness were held at the First Baptist Church Sunday, Feb. 19, at 3 p.m. with the pastor, Dr. W. L. Holcomb officiating. Burial was in the Winnfield Cemetery under direction of Hixson Funeral Home. Acting as pallbearers were W. D. Walker, Jewell Maxey, Harper Terrill, C. E. Sherwood, Jesse Thornton, and Matt Milam, Jr. Honorary pallbearers were deacons of the First Baptist Church and members of the deceased's Sunday School class. A member of a Winn Parish pioneer family, Mr. Sowers had been prominently connected in business and civic affairs during his lifetime. At one time he was a member and business director for the Central Louisiana State Hospital and a business partner of the late Gov. O. K. Allen in the grocery business. He established the first Jitney Jungle Store in Winnfield. In his early days he was employed by the S. J. Harper Store and W. M. Milam, and more lately by the Winn Motors, Inc. Mr. Sowers was a native of Alto, Texas, the son of the late Newton C. Sowers and Anna Newsom Sowers. He had been a resident of Winn since the age of one year. His wife, who preceded him in death, was the former Miss Leola Johnson, whom he married Oct. 13, 1907. He served as president of the parish school board for many years and was a Mason, a member of the Woodmen of the World, and a deacon and teacher in the First Baptist Church. Mr. Sowers also a former president of the Winnfield Hunting Club. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Violet Gates of Winnfield and Mrs. Charles Duncan of Bossier City; give grandchldren, Carroll Gates, Karen, Charles, Jr., Sarah Lea, and John Carroll Duncan; one brother, Howard Sowers of Winnfield and two sisters, Mrs. Cora Abrams and Mrs. Crockett Erskins, both of Sikes.
