When he was 16 years of age, his father moved to Lawrenceburg, Indiana, and died there in 1862. The boy refused to go to the north, going instead to Pike County, Mississippi. At age 21 he married Margaret, a daughter of Thompson Wallace. He joined the Missionary Baptist Church, it is thought at old Shady Grove in either Pike or Lawrence County. At any early age he moved to Winn Parish, LA., in December 1858. He joined Shady Grove Church and was ordained a deacon shortly after, serving till his death. He was survived by 6 children; he had one son buried in the Union Grove Church yard at Baton Rouge. The son, Christopher C. C. Sowers, died 10 June 1864. Obituary signed by "A son, N. C. Sowers."
