Sowers Passes Away Here Sunday Services For Native of the Parish Held at First Baptist Church Mrs. Eunice McCarty Sowers, widow of the late W. J. Sowers, and member of one of the oldest families of Winn Parish, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. V. Scott, here at 8:30 Sunday morning, following an illness of three weeks duration. Her death was said to be caused from pneumonia which she developed on Friday. Mrs. Sowers was a native of Winn Parish. She was born in the Beech Creek Community August 27, 1852. She lived in that section until her marriage to William Jasper Sowers on August 11, 1870. Soon afterward she and her husband located in Winnfield where Mr. Sowers served as Sheriff of Winn Parish. They moved from here to Texas where they lived fro many years. They came back to Winnfield in 1900, Mr. Sowers passing away in 1904. Mrs. Sowers with some of her children remained here while others went back to Texas and engaged in business enterprises in their respective localities. An amiable disposition and a sympathetic nature were some of the admirable characteristics of the deceased. It can be truthfully said by members of her family, her relatives, and close friends, who knew her best, that her innate serenity never seemed to be disturbed though she had many trying burdens during her long life. It cannot be recalled that she ever manifested irritability or impatience at any time when it seemed that she was the most sorely tired. The deceased was a member of the First Baptist Church here. She was a regular attendant upon the services until the loss of her sight a few years ago made her more or less a shut in. Funeral services were held from the First Baptist Church at 10 o'clock Monday morning. Dr. B. C. Land, pastor, conducted the services with the assistance of Rev. A. Stokes and Rev. Tucker, local pastors. Surviving relatives are three sons, J. C. Sowers of Corrigan, Texas, G. C. Sowers, of Waxahachie, Texas, Will A. Sowers of Beaumont, Texas; three daughters, Mrs. J. V. Scott, Mrs. Clarence Dark, and Miss Cora Sowers of Winnfield; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Holmes who lives in Ouachita Parish and Mrs. Nancy Corley of Oakdale. A number of grandchildren also survive.
