Engine Last Saturday Here Walked Into Path of Locomotive in Local T. & G. Yards George Sowers, negro, about 50 years of age was instantly killed last Saturday afternoon about 4:30 when a Tremont and Gulf railway locomotive struck him in the yards of the company. According to Phil Butts, who was backing the locomotive into the roundhouse, Sowers stepped from the door of the railroad's sand house directly into the path of the engine. The machine was moving slowly at the time but there was no chance to stop it in time. Sowers, who had recently been employed painting the smokestacks of the Mansfield Lumber Company had stopped in the sand room to warm himself as is the custom of negroes and transients in that part of town. Having warmed himself he stepped from the door of the sandhouse directly into the path of the engine.
