All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: May 23, 1957 Winn Parish Enterprise News-American Death Claims Mrs. Joyce Love Allen Stare In Boston Mrs. Joyce Love Allen Stare, 43, wife of the chairman of the Department of Nutrition of the Harvard School of Public Health, and daughter of the late Governor and Mrs. Oscar K. Allen, died unexpectedly of a heart ailment in a Boston hospital Monday night. Born and reared in Winnfield, Mrs. Stare was a graduate of Louisiana State University and held the masters degree from the University of Wisconsin. Mrs. Stare moved to Baton Rouge with her father when he became Highway Commissioner in the Huey Long Administration. Mr. Allen served as governor from 1932 until his death in 1936. Mrs. Stare married her husband, world famous nutritionist Dr. Frederick J. Stare in the governor's mansion in the fall of 1935, just a few months before her father's death. She met her husband while both were students at the University of Wisconsin. Shortly after their marriage, the two went to England where he studied at Oxford University. When they came back to the states, Dr. Stare took a position at the University of Wisconsin and later moved to Boston where he taught at Harvard. He is now a professor at Harvard, and has written many magazine articles on nutrition. Besides her husband, she leaves three children, Frederick, Jr., a Harvard freshman; David, a student at Phillips Andover Academy; and a daughter, Mary; and a brother, Asa Benton Allen, of Dover, Mass. Mrs. Stare is the niece of former U. S. Representative A. Leonard Allen of Winnfield; and of Mrs. Mattie Broyles of Leesville. Funeral services were held at Wellesley Hills, Mass., Unitarian Church at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
