M. Funeral Services Last Saturday Morning At Couley Church Alfred Stevens, age 85, pioneer citizen of Winn Parish, died at his home in the Couley Community, Thursday afternoon of last week following an extended illness. The deceased, born and reared in Grant Parish, was the youngest of 14 children. Four elder brothers served in the Confederate Army, two of whom were killed in the Battle of Gettysburg. The two other brothers who returned from the war were instrumental in quelling the Colfax Riot. February 15, 1883 he was married to Miss Angeline Rebecca Fletcher also of Grant Parish, who survives him. In 1901, they with their family, moved to Winn Parish and built the present home in the Couley Community. In early life, Mr. and Mrs. Stevens celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary at their home which was attended by relatives and friends. Mr. Stevens is survived by his wife and six children. Three sons, Jesse J. Stevens of Atlanta, Ga., Crawford H. Stevens of Colfax, La., and J. Cheston Stevens of Atlanta, La.; Three daughters, Mrs. C. O. Nugent of Alexandria, Mrs. W. J. Owens of Baton Rouge, and Miss Millie Stevens of Winnfield. Funeral services were held at the home and at the Couley Church, Saturday morning with the Rev. Lula Wardlow, former pastor, and the Rev. Tillman Brown, the present pastor, officiating. Interment was in Couley Cemetery, October 7th. Pallbearers were Rev. Murries Gunn, Willard H. Kilpatrick, Ira N. Downs, George Ferguson, M. L. Wyatt, Warren Fletcher, J. T. Quinalty, and Pete Hodnett.
