Jordan said Stephens was struck in the chest and neck by a tree he sawed down as the tree rolled and jumped backwards over the stump. The sheriff said that Stephens' body was found about 11:15 a.m. by J. K. Martin and Clyde Bartlett who were supervising pulpwood and cross tie cutting operations on either side of a small logging road 100 yards from the Calvin- Friendship Road. Jordan said at least one woodsman had seen Stephens 15-30 minutes before the incident. Stephens was working alone using a power saw, the sheriff added, and the tree which pinned him down had a curved trunk. This probably caused the tree to roll unexpectedly fast when the treetop brushed into standing timber on the way down, Jordan theorized. Young Stephens was a 1959 graduate of the Calvin High School and was a member of the Baptist Church. Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Thursday, September 27, at the Antioch Methodist Church with the Rev. D. W. McDaniel, Sister Hazel Anderson, and Rev. W. F. Fussell officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Olline Dunlap Stephens; one son, Alvin Gregory, 11 months, one daughter, Susan Cheryl, three years old; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Stephens; and one sister, Anita Cheryl Stephens, all of Ward 10.
