All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: October 12, 1944 Winn Parish Enterprise Alfred Stevens, 86, Succumbs at His Home in Couley Alfred Stevens, 86 years, 3 months, and 9 days, died at his home in the Couley community Thursday, Oct. 5, 1944. Mr. Stevens was born and reared in Grant Parish and was the youngest child in a family of 14. Four older brothers served in the Confederate Army, and two brothers were killed in the Battle of Gettysburg. Two of Mr. Stevens' brothers who returned from the Civil War were instrumental in the quelling of the Colfax Riot and Mr. Stevens, as a young man during reconstruction days, helped establish white supremacy in Grant Parish and Louisiana. On February 15, 1883, Mr. Stevens was married to Miss Angelina Rebecca Fletcher, also of Grant Parish and the youngest of 14 children. In 1901, Mr. Stevens and family moved to Winn Parish, where he built the present home in the Couley community. In early life Mr. Stevens affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was widely known for his outstanding traits of honesty and responsibility to his home and community and was active in civic and religious affairs, and believed in public education and supported the establishment of schools in Grant and Winn Parishes. Last February 14, Mr. and Mrs. Stevens celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary at their home among many relatives and friends. Mr. Stevens is survived by his wife and six children; three sons, Jesse J. Stevens of Atlanta, Ga., Crawford H. Stevens of Colfax, La., and J. Cheston Stevens of Atlanta, La.; three daughters, Mrs. C. O. Nugent of Alexandria, Mrs. W. F. Owens of Baton Rouge, and Miss Millie Stevens of Winnfield. Funeral services were held at the home and at the Couley Methodist Church Saturday, October 7, under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home. Rev. Lula Wardlow, former pastor of the Couley Church, and Rev. Tillman Brown, the present pastor, officiated, with interment in the Couley Cemetery. The profusion of beautiful floral offerings and the numerous friends attending the funeral attested to the high esteem in which the deceased was held. Pallbearers were Rev. Murriet Gunn, Willard H. Kilpatrick, Ira N. Downs, Gus Ferguson, L. M. Wyatt, Warren Fletcher, J. T. Quinalty, and Pete Hadnot.
