The aged man died of internal injuries and a crushed skull, the parish coroner said. Lieut. Percy Sharp, commander of the Civilian Conservation Corps camp near Mooringsport and driver of the car which struck Smith, was held blameless in the accident according to the press reports. Sharp stated that dust caused by high winds prevented his seeing Smith until he was only a short distance away. He said that he swerved to miss Smith, but that the farmer became confused and darted back, directly into the path of the car.
