All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: December 25, 1974 Winn Parish Enterprise News-American Mrs. Alwin Stokes Dies After Brief Illness Mrs. Elizabeth Smith McIlhenny Stokes, 82, of Winnfield, died December 19, 1974 in a local hospital. Last rites were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in the First Presbyterian Church with the pastor, Rev. William Robert Gage officiating. Burial was in the Winnfield Cemetery under the direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Ruling Elders of the church: Earl Applewhite, J. R. Harrison, H. E. Powell, Jr., and Deacons Robert L. Kraft, Eck H. Bozeman, D. L. Hofman, R. H. Watts, and member E. J. Buchanan. Born in Forest, Scott County, Miss., Mrs. Stokes was the daughter of the late Dr. George Allan McIlhenny and Mary Elizabeth Amis. She attended the public schools in Mississippi and graduated from Mississippi State College for Women. She was married to Rev. Alwin Stokes, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Winnfield, in Forest, Mississippi, June 14, 1917. Rev. and Mrs. Stokes lived and served in the church here in Winnfield over a period of thirty-eight years and both were most active in the life and work of the church, in civic affairs, and in youth work. Rev. Alwin Stokes preceded Mrs. Stokes in death on March 5, 1962. His was the first funeral service held in this new church where he was Pastor Emeritus. Mrs. Stokes was a life member of the Women of the Church, of the Presbyterian Church U. W. She had served in this group since its beginning when it was the Ladies Aid, then the Women's Auxiliary, and presently known as the Women of the Church. She also held membership in the Order of Eastern Star, and during the more than 50 years she resided in Winnfield she has been a faithful servant of God, and the church, and the Lord. She was an active person with the young girls in Campfire Girls Organization. She taught Sunday School and was musician, organist, and pianist many years. She is survived by one son, Dr. George Stokes, Dean of Liberal Arts College of Northwestern State University in Natchitoches; one daughter, Mrs. Robert Edgington of West Monroe; one brother, Oliver McIlhenny of Natchez, Miss., and six grandchildren.
