STRONG DEAD Prominent Newspaper Man and Confederate Soldier Passes Away Died in Winnfield, La., at 1:25 a.m., Friday, December 11, 1908, Major Will A. Strong, aged 62 years. The deceased was born at St. Maurice, September 14, 1847, and was in his 62nd year. A boy when the summons came to arms, he served his country faithfully and true during the war as a member of Company D, 2nd Louisiana Cavalry. After the war he returned to his home to fill the role of a useful citizen. He was always an active participator in the affairs of life among his fellow citizens. Hence, he has made his mark along the avenue of time. As a citizen of Winnfield and Managing Editor of The Southern Sentinel, he has contributed largely to the growth of this town. His life has been one of usefulness and benefits to his fellow-men. He was the beau ideal of the Southern Gentleman. Always kind and considerate for his friends, he was the acme of good humor and that hospitality that marks the gentleman to the manner born. He leaves a wife and several children to mourn his untimely death. His remains will be laid to rest in the family burial grounds at St. Maurice, La. He was a prominent member of the Masonic Fraternity, Knights of Pythias and Locomotive Engineers. Few men there have been in the active pursuits of life who have left more prominent marks of his usefulness. Gentle, kind, sociable and always ready to do good. There have been few men in active life more publically useful, truer to his friends and the typical type of the Southern gentleman. His family have lost a true husband and father, his sisters a loving brother, and his friends one of God's gentlemen. How deeply the sympathy extended to one and all no mere words can express. May their hearts be comforted in their sudden affliction. (This obituary appeared in a Winnfield newspaper and was taken from a copy of same found in my grandmother Nena Plunkett Davies' possessions years ago. It probably appeared in the Southern Sentinel. Will Strong also served as the Louisiana Secretary of State and in various political positions in Winn Parish. Submitted by Greggory Ellis Davies, Winnfield, Winn Parish, LA.)
