Sutton, 87 Years, Dies Wednesday Last Rites Were Held At St. Maurice Thursday Afternoon Charles Henderson Sutton, 87, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. H. Crawford here, Wednesday morning, at 1:30 o'clock, following a two days serious illness. He had been in failing health for years. A short service was held at the home Thursday afternoon at 1 o'clock, following which the remains were carried to the St. Maurice Independence Methodist Church where last rites were conducted by Rev. G. A. Morgan, pastor of the Winnfield Methodist Church and Rev. Alwin Stokes, local Presbyterian pastor. Interment was in the St. Maurice Cemetery. Born in Merriweather County, Georgia, July 28, 1851, Mr. Sutton moved while a young boy to Alabama, later coming with his family to Trenton, near West Monroe in Louisiana. The family soon moved to St. Maurice in Winn Parish when he was 13 years of age. Here he lived a large part of his life engaging in the operation of a plantation. In 1901 he moved to Winnfield where he has resided since. He is a former deputy marshal and street commissioner and in his younger days was active in all community enterprises. At the time of his death he was a member of the local Woodmen of the World Camp. In 1874 Mr. Sutton married Miss Virginia Moss Strong and to this union seventeen children were born, three of whom survive. They are Mrs. J. H. Crawford of Winnfield; Mrs. T. H. Stell of Shreveport and W. E. Sutton of Montgomery. An adopted son, Clarence E. Sutton of Winnfield also survives together with seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
