Doyle Wesson and Norris Curry officiating. Burial was in the Wright Cemetery near Sikes, Louisiana under the direction of Southern Funeral Home, Winnfield, La. Mr. Smith, age 99, of Sikes died at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, May 26, 1994 in the Winn Parish Medical Center in Winnfield. He was a native of Sikes, La. and a member of the East Winnfield Baptist Church. He was an innovative pioneer farmer of Winn Parish. Although he was always trying new and improved farming techniques. He also worked to keep the past alive. The Smith Farm has been a learning place for area school children in field trips. Making hand carved ox bows, breaking and working oxen in a modern society brought delight to all who visited the farm. Mr. Smith, along with his ox team, were always an attraction at local fairs and parades. Pictures and stories of his work/success have been carried in many newspapers, magazines, and on a map of Louisiana. He was the feature of the Ethma Odom's Show for Thanksgiving, 1988, KALB-TV, Channel 5, Alexandria, La. Mr. Smith was recognized as "Outstanding Farmer of Winn Parish" by the USDA and Woodmen of the World awarded him the "Outstanding Farmer". Survivors are three sons, Delmer V. Smith, Iowa, La., Curtis W. Smith, Olla, La., and Jack Smith of Winnfield; two daughters, Nadine Simmons of Natchitoches, La., and Nellene Fisher of Monroe, La.; one brother, Eugene D. Smith of Sikes, La., and one sister, Etta Medford, Henderson, Texas; 25 grandchildren, 48 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. Pallbearers were Max Dale Smith, Roy Smith, Ferral Guillory, Russell Simmons, Jerry Dingler, Robert Dean Smith, Lloyd Rogers Smith, Wayne Edward Smith, David R. Simmons, and Wallace Smith.
