Tullos Man Dies In Shooting At Grayson

One person is dead and another hospitalized as a result of a double shooting
that occurred at the Grayson Trailer Park one mile south of Columbia on U. S.
165 around 1:15 a.m. Tuesday.

The sheriff's office said Sam E. Tidwell, Jr., 44, of Tullos, was killed by a
shotgun blast fired by Enoch Earl Poole, 36, of Olla, after Tidwell had shot
and wounded Mrs. Mary Tidwell, 33, the owner of the trailer and a third cousin
of Tidwell by marriage.  

The Tidwell woman was taken to Caldwell Hospital in Columbia before being
transferred to St. Francis Hospital in Monroe where she is listed in
satisfactory condition Tuesday night.

According to Caldwell Parish Sheriff Floyd Hodges, Poole had left the Tidwell
trailer earlier but had returned at the request of Mrs. Tidwell's sister, Mrs.
Gloria Jean Oxner, after the Tidwell pair had continued arguing for some time.
Two Caldwell Parish sheriff's deputies, also summonsed by the occupants of the
trailer during the argument, arrived just as the shootings were taking place.

Tidwell's shotgun blast struck a dog the Tidwell woman was holding at the
time, killing the animal but deflecting the pellets which then struck her in
the chest, officials said.  Poole then picked up a shotgun and fired once,
killing Tidwell.  Several persons were said to have witnessed the shooting,
officials said.

Late Tuesday morning in Columbia, Caldwell Parish Coroner Dr. E. L. Carroll
ruled the shooting justifiable homicide after an inquest, presided over by
Caldwell Parish Asst. District Attorney Donald Burns.  

Funeral services for Tidwell are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at the First
Baptist Church.
