With deep sorry and profound regret, the people of Winnfield received the news of the death of R. L. Tannehill, which occurred in Shreveport, at the Schumpert Sanitarium, Friday evening, December 7, 1917, he having gone there several weeks ago for an operation and medical treatment. He stood the operation successfully and was getting along nicely when he was stricken with pneumonia, and when it was thought that he was about to recover from the same, he was suddenly afflicted with a serious kidney trouble, which soon resulted in his death. His remains were brought to his home here Saturday morning following his death, funeral and burial services ____________________________ place Sunday morning at 10 __________at the Baptist Church by Rev. _____________ King of Arcadia, after which the _______________________ was laid to rest in the Winnfield cemetery with the beautiful and impressive Masonic ceremony. His first term only consisted of two years but the other two terms were four years each, the same as we have it at the present time. In 1892 he was honored by the Populist Party nomination for the position of governor of Louisiana and received a heavy vote in Winn and adjoining parishes, and elsewhere throughout the State, his majority in his home parish being 1,001, all of which indicates the high esteem in which he was held by his friends and those who knew him best. Mr. Tannehill was 69 years, 8 months, and 27 days old when the Grim Reaper, death, and with his passing Winnfield, Winn Parish and Louisiana have lost one of its most beloved citizens. When he was in the prime of life and of his career all movements which tended to reform and uplift of the common people received his active support and co-operation. He was a leader in constructive work during the dark days of reconstruction and even until the time of his death was highly regarded by many of the leaders of Louisiana's affairs. (This obit was furnished by Ms. Jane Ann Hudson Kobelski, great granddaughter of Richard Lafayette Tannehill, Sr. Much of the obituary is missing or illegible due to age, etc., and it was clipped without appearance of date. Additionally, I think Mr. Tannehill was Winnfield's first elected mayor.)
