S. 84 Winn's first traffic fatality of 1969 is 19 year old David Ross Taylor, of Winnfield, who died instantly when the car he was driving hit a bridge 1.8 miles east of Winnfield on U. S. 84. Time of the accident was 12:10 a.m. January 6. Taylor was traveling west on 84 in a 1967 Dodge Coronet, when he lost control of the auto on a curve, dropped off the road on the right side, crossed back on the left side of the road, and hit the guard rail. The auto then slid down the guard rail to Port de Luce Creek relief bridge, struck the bridge abutment before going over the rail, traveling 47 feet to the edge of the water on the bank of the opposite side. The driver and an occupant, Charles Cockerham, 16, of Winnfield, were thrown from the car, causing instant death for Taylor. Cockerham received lacerations, cuts, and bruises, and was able to walk to the ambulance which took him to Winnfield General Hospital where he is receiving treatment. Funeral services for Taylor were held Tuesday, January 7 in the chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home, Rev. Homer Ivy officiating. Interment was in Garden of Memories Cemetery. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Taylor of Winnfield; one brother, Russell Taylor of Dallas, Texas; two sisters, Mrs. Suzanne Stevenson of Richardson, Texas, and Miss Margaret Ann Taylor of Dallas, Texas; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. T. D. Thornton, Ashdown, Ark. A native of Ashdown, Arkansas, he was a 1967 graduate of Winnfield High School and had attended LSU. Acting as pallbearers were John G. Crooks, Ronald Brazzell, Larry Paulson, Benton Teddlie, Steve Vines, and Wayne Moore.
