Swanson Dies After Several Weeks Illness Mrs. Melvin Thomas, 27 years of age, died at the St. Francis Sanitarium, Monroe, Wednesday morning, 2:30 o'clock, following an illness of several weeks. Funeral services were conducted at First Baptist Church Thursday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock. Ministers conducting the rites were the Rev. Alwin Stokes and the Rev. Ellis Smith, of Winnfield, Rev. John L. Dodge, Jonesboro, and Rev. John Kitchenham, Columbia. Interment was in the family plot in Winnfield Cemetery. A host of sorrowing relatives and friends attended the last rites. Active pallbearers were Zack Lawrence, Pleasant Heard, Alex Hill, Bill White, John Emerson, and Tracy Harrell. Acting as honorary pallbearers were Charles Walsworth, Bryant Sholars, D. E. Sikes, A. L. Smith, George Bell Payne, W. T. Heflin, V. L. Brumfield, Harry Fuller, Johnny Wright, Carver DeLoach, Lloyd Key, Max Branch, A. Peterson, L. F. Morrison, Edgar Jackson, J. W. Perdue, A. T. Drewett, Matt Milam, E. J. Byrnes, Dr. A. W. Radescich, W. W. Allen, B. L. Anderson, J. N. Hyde, J. W. Mitchell, and A. I. Talton. Mrs. Thomas, before her marriage, was Miss Annabelle Swanson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl M. Swanson. She attended school here and after her graduation completed a course at Louisiana Tech and the University of Colorado. For the past several years she has been teaching in the Winnfield Grammar School, where she took a leading part in the Parent-Teacher organization and school activities. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Winnfield. Mrs. Thomas was regarded as one of Winnfield's most beloved young women and her death came as a distinct shock to the community. Surviving the deceased are the husband, Melvon Thomas, parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl M. Swanson, and one brother, Clyde, of Winnfield.
