Dale Thornton, 18 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Thornton of Sikes, will be held at the Sikes Baptist Church Saturday, June 12, at 3 p.m. A military ceremony will be held. Pfc. Thornton lost his life Monday of last week as the result of the swamping of a Liberty launch off the coast of Norfolks, Va., in a storm. The Navy notified the family Wednesday of this week that his body had been recovered. The remains were sent from Portsmouth, Va., June 9, accompanied by Marine Escort Robert Bergstron, and will arrive in Winnfield, Friday, June 11, at 4:43 p.m. via the L. and A Railway. A telegram from the Navy stated "Regrets remains not to be viewed. Sincerest sympathy extended." Dale, who enlisted in the Marines one and a half years ago, is survived by his parents; two brothes, Donald, also in the Marines, stationed in Virginia; and Perkins of Sikes; two sisters, Mrs. James Box, Shreveport and Dorothy Nell Thornton of Sikes; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. L. R. Simmons, Rt. 1, Dodson. He is the nephew of Mrs. E. E. Prince, Mrs. A. F. Creel, Mrs. J. W. Brister, and O. N. Simmons, Winnfield; Mrs. Stanley Branch and Mrs. Iley Gentry, Sikes; M. A. Simmons, Beaumont, Texas; J. V. Simmons, Dallas, Texas; Homer Simmons, Tenn., Mrs. O. B. Martin, Robstown, Texas, Mrs. H. R. Thompson, Lake Charles, Mrs. Whit Usrey, Ruston, Ray Thornton, Eros, and Herschel Thornton, Monroe.
