Tugwell Held April 15th Prominent Citizen Succumbs After Several Weeks' Illness Robert W. Tugwell, one of Winnfield's most prominent citizens, died at his home here Friday, April 14, at 11:15, following an illness of several weeks. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon by the Rev. Ellis Smith, pastor of the Methodist Church. Burial was in the Winnfield Cemetery. Mr. Tugwell was born in Farmerville, La., Feb. 8, 1858. In 1880 he was married to Laura Dean and of the union two children were born, Joseph L., and Andrew P. Tugwell. In 1884 Mr. Tugwell and his family moved to Stephens, Ark., where he engaged in the mercantile business. Later in that year he went into the southwest as an employee of the Cotton Belt Railroad. He was transferred to Plain Dealing in 1889 as station agent where he remained until 1900. That year he moved to Winnfield as the first agent of the Rock Island here. Between 1904 and 1908 Mr. Tugwell and his family lived at Natchitoches, moving back to Winnfield during the latter year, where he opened the first Western Union Telegraph office here and where he remained until he was forced to retire because of failing health. A member of the Baptist Church and active in church and civic affairs, Mr. Tugwell held an enviable place in the life of the community. The deceased is survived by his widow, Mrs. Laura Tugwell, and two sons, J. L. Tugwell of Winnfield, and A. P. Tugwell, chairman of the Louisiana Highway Commission, of Baton Rouge. Pallbearers included O. Trahan, W. E. Heard, Alton Knott, Mack L. Branch, J. W. Perdue, and Joe T. Terrill. (Submitted by Greggory Ellis Davies, Winnfield, Winn Parish, LA.)
