All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** THE WINNFIELD-NEWS AMERICAN Friday, September 3, 1937 Charles Underwood of Sikes Killed In Accident Saturday Three Young Ladies and One Other Man Seriously Injured Charles Underwood of Sikes was killed almost instantly and Miss Elizabeth Bertram of Hodge was seriously injured Saturday night about one mile north of Chatham when the car in which they were riding left the highway at a curve and crashed into a tree. Three other occupants of the automobile, W. R. Thompson of Sikes, Miss Eunice Cathey of Hodge and Miss Minnie Gunter of Eros were in critical condition in Monroe and Shreveport. Thompson was take to Charity Hospital in Shreveport Sunday for treatment. He received fractures of both legs and a fractured right arm. His condition was considered grave by hospital attendants Sunday night. Miss Cathey received fractures of both legs and severe lacerations about the face and head. She is receiving treatment at Riverside sanitarium in Monroe, while Miss Bertram is now recovering from lesser injuries. None of the injured persons was able to remove themselves from the wrecked automobile. The condition of the three survivors was such Sunday night that neither was able to give any details of how the accident occurred. The automobile was demolished in the accident. Funeral services for young Underwood, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Underwood were held Monday at Sikes where interment was made in the family cemetery. Rev. Tom Ratclliff of Olla conducted the services. The deceased is survived by six brothers, Clayton, Carl, Lee Jr., Clarence, Billie Kay and Paul Douglas all of Sikes and four sisters, Mrs. D. O. Cox of Tallulah and Misses Willa D., Vere Gene and Maxine Underwood of Sikes and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Underwood.
