All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: September 2, 1937 Winn Parish Enterprise Crash Kills Two Persons Near Chatham Charles Underwood, of Sikes, and Elizabeth Bertram Succumb Charles Underwood of Sikes was killed instantly Saturday night when the car he was driving near Chatham left the highway at a curve and crashed into a tree. Elizabeth Bertram of Hodge, also an occupant of the car, died late Sunday in a Monroe sanitarium from injuries. Two other occupants of the automobile, W. R. Thompson, 15, of Sikes, and Eunice Cathey, of Hodge, were in a critical condition in hospitals in Monroe and Shreveport. Thompson was taken to Charity Hospital in Shreveport Sunday for treatment. He received fractures of both legs and a fractured right arm. His condition was improving and it was thought that he would recover. Miss Cathey received fractures of both legs and severe lacerations about the head and face. None of the injured persons was able to remove themselves from the wrecked automobile. The automobile was demolished in the accident. Funeral For Underwood Charles Underwood was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Underwood of Sikes. Funeral services were conducted at the Sikes Baptist Church Monday, with the Rev. J. B. Adams officiating, Edmonds Funeral Home in charge. Pallbearers were Jack Ellerbee, Curtis Smith, Connie Underwood, Hershel Sikes, and Virgil Free. Surviving are the parents, one grandparent, W. R. Thompson of Sikes, the following brothers and sisters, Clayton, Carl, Lee, Jr., Clarence, Billie Kay, Willa Dean, Vera Jean, Maxine, all of Sikes; Mrs. Dee O. Cox, nee Corrine, of Tallulah, La.; also the following uncles and aunts, Mr. and Mrs. Laverett Underwood, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Ellerbee, Sikes; Mr. and Mrs. Ivy B. Thompson, Jonesboro; Mr. and Mrs. Wiley Thompson, Dunn, La.; Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Thompson, Sikes; Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Thompson, Sikes; Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Thompson, Shreveport; Mr. and Mrs. F. U. Collie, Monroe; Mr. and Mrs. L. L. Johnson, Sikes; Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Sikes, Sikes; and Miss Deliah Thompson, Sikes.
