All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** >From the July 22, 1932 Winnfield News-American John Wesley Vance Succumbs to Long Illness Friday, 15th One of Oldest Citizens of Ward 6, Served as Justice of Peace for 28 Years John Wesley Vance, one of the oldest citizens in Ward 6, died at his home in Atlanta last Friday morning following an illness of several months. Mr. Vance was born in Lincoln Parish near old Vienna, March 19, 1854, and was at the time of his death 78 years, three months and twenty-six days old. In about 1885 he moved to Winn Parish and settled in the Atlanta community where he has lived continuously since. He was a member of the Baptist Church. Always active in civic and religious circles, Mr. Vance was entering his eighth term as justice of the peace of Ward 6, having served twenty-eight years in that office. Even in his declining years he was urged to remain in office by the people of his community. Surviving him are his two daughters, Mrs. Howard Sowers of Winnfield and Mrs. Wessie Porter of Atlanta. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. A. H. Cullen, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Winnfield on Saturday afternoon at two o'clock and interment made in the Atlanta cemetery.
