All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: March 21, 1984 Winn Parish Enterprise News-American Early Winn Librarian Succumbs Miss Bess Vaughan of Ruston, one of three librarians involved with development of the Winn Parish Library, died Wednesday, March 14, 1984 at Lincoln General Hospital in Ruston after a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, March 15, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Ruston where she was a member, and burial followed in the Greenwood Cemetery. Bessie Lucille Vaughan was born in Morgan City, La., the daughter of the late Rev. and Mrs. Robert Vaughan of Ruston. Her father was for many years the well known director of the Methodist Children's Home in Ruston. Miss Vaughan began her long and distinguished career as librarian with the La. Library Commission before attending Columbia University in New York where she received a master's degree in library science. She returned to Louisiana to work for the La. State Library in a Tri-Parish Library Demonstration in the early 1930s which included the parishes of Winn, Jackson, and Grant, and resulted in the establishment of the Winn Parish Library. Miss Vaughan subsequently served as librarian at Shreve Memorial Library in Shreveport, and later helped with demonstrations in St. Tammany and Lincoln Parishes. She remained as head librarian in Lincoln Parish until her retirement, and maintained memberships in both the La. Library and American Library Associations. She was an active member of the DAR and was serving as treasurer since 1980 of the La. Chapter of the Daughters of Founders and Patriots until her death. She was much interested in genealogy and had done extensive family research. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Mable V. Manning of Ruston; four nephews, three nieces, eight great nephews, and six great nieces.
