Al Walker Dies Of Accidental Gunshot Wound

Alton A. Walker, 49, of 308 Mosley Drive, mail carrier for rural route three,
and local photographer, died at his home at about 6 p.m. Saturday from
a gunshot wound.

Following an investigation, a ruling of accidental death has been made by Dr.
David Silas, acting coroner.

Mr. Walker was returning from a fishing trip and was believed to be returning
a gun which was under the seat of his car to the glove compartment when the
pistol fired.  Dr. Silas said there was only one shot fired.  The bullet
entered the right side and exited near the top center of the head.

Mr. Walker had been with the Postal Service since 1949.  He served in World
War II from Aug. 3, 1942 to Aug. 10, 1948, during which time he was a
prisoner of war in Germany for 16 months.  Twice again he was in
service, the last during the Korean Conflict from February 26, 1951 to Oct.
31, 1952.  He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Air Medal.  He was
retired Army Major in the Reserve and was a member of the V. F. W. and
the Baptist Church.

Last rites were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in the Laurel Heights Baptist
Church with the Rev. C. C. Martin, pastor, and Rev. W. F. Harrell officiating. 
Full military rites followed at the Garden of Memories cemetery.

Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Doris Walker; one son, James Robert Walker of
Winnfield; four daughters, Mrs. Susan Garrett, Martha, and Cynthia Walker,
all of Winnfield, and Mrs. Sheryl Kelley of Jonesboro; his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Robert Walker of Winnfield, and a sister, Mrs. Marie Adams of
Winnfield and one grandchild.
