Clarence Holden, 18 year old Negro youth who was fishing in a boat on the opposite side of the pond reported that he heard a noise, and looked over and he could see Walker in the water trying to get back into his boat. As Holden started over toward Walker he said that Walker turned loose of the boat and that all he saw was his hat floating on the water. Holden went to Walker's house and reported the accident to his wife who called police. A sheriff's office deputy reported that Walker had a trot line and a net in the water and evidently was standing bent over in the boat trying to lift the line or net from the water, when the boat tilted and pitched him out. Sheriff Sanford Jordan and Deputy Don Thompson retrieved Walker's body in about 10 to 12 foot of water with a grappling hook about 12:40. Artificial respiration was given by State Trooper Dan Page, Sheriff R. S. Jordan, and city policeman Richard Cotton, but they were unable to revive Walker. Walker had worked for the Rock Island Railroad until his retirement a few years ago and for a time had been employed by the city garbage department.
