W. D. Walker Succumbs To Heart Attack Winn Parish Superintendent of Schools W. D. Walker, age 61, died in a Winnfield hospital at 12:36 p.m. September 30, 1962 following a short illness. He had suffered a series of heart attacks within a week's illness that claimed his life. Last rites were conducted at the First Baptist church at 1 p.m. Monday, with Dr. W. L. Holcomb, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the Sharon Cemetery in Claiborne Parish, under direction of Southern Funeral Home. Serving as pallbearers were R. L. Terry, Kidd Farr, Marvin Wyatt, Matt Milam, Jr., Max Crowe, Leo Shelton, D. E. Sikes, and Stanley Smith. Named as honorary pallbearers were principals of Winn Parish schools, members of the Winn Parish School Board, deacons of the First Baptist Church, and members of Sunday School class. Mr. Walker had been superintendent of schools for seven years during which time an extensive building program had been in progress, including new buildings in practically every school system in the parish. He had been a deacon in the First Baptist Church for more than 20 years, and was treasurer of the church and a teacher of a men's Sunday School class at the time of his death. Prior to that he had been a member of the church choir. A native of Jackson Parish, Mr. Walker received a degree in mathematics from Northwestern State College where he also played football and was a member of the men's quartet. In later years he received his Master's Degree in School Administration from Peabody College. He first taught school in Dry Prong, then Jonesboro where he was also football coach. He later taught math-science in Harrish High School in Claiborne Parish where he met and married Miss Arvilla Green, also a teacher. In 1929, Mrs. Walker came to Winn parish as principal of Atlanta High School, and in 1935 became principal of the Winnfield schools. When the elementary schools were separated from the high school he served as principal of Westside Elementary until he was named Superintendent of Education. Mr. Walker was also active in clubs, serving as the first president of the Winnfield Lions Club. Because of conflicting meeting hours he transferred to the Winnfield Rotary Club where he has been an active member a number of years. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. W. D. Walker, Winnfield; one daughter, Miss Joy Nell Walker, Alexandria; two brothers, Lester Walker, Winnfield, and C. E. Walker, Tallulah; two sisters, Mrs. S. J. Tullos, Jonesboro, and Mrs. W. E. Frazier, Shreveport; and a number of nieces and nephews.
