John Hamilton Walker, 83 years old, member of a pioneer family in Grant Parish, and lifelong resident of Pollock, father of Henry Walker, local driver education instructor, died suddenly at his home at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, October 26th. Death came just as he would have wished it, quietly, and without warning, at the end of a day spent visiting old friends in Alexandria, and while emerged with feeding his stock at his home. John Walker celebrated as a 52 year employee of the Missouri Pacific Railroad, and the love of his life was giant passenger locomotives. After retiring from the Missouri-Pacific Railway, he took up his second career, widely known for his skills in farming and his green thumb. He kept a warm patriarchal relationship with four generations of kin. He was constantly trying new things in agri-business and was constantly on call as "bee-master", an almost legendary calling today. He was an inspiration to his friends and all who came within arm's reach were his friends. Mr. Walker was a member of the Pollock Baptist Church, the Masonic Order of Alexandria, and the Engineers and Locomotive Union. He was a retired engineer. Funeral services were held October 28, at Hixson's Funeral Home in Pineville with Rev. Gerald Williams officiating. Interment was in Forest Lawn Memorial Park near Alexandria. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. L. E. (Gloria) Clark, Monroe; Mrs. O. W. (Bessie) Whatley, Pollock; Mrs. Dan (Pauline) Bergeron, and Mrs. Sam (Lou) Heidelberg, both of Baton Rouge; three sons, Henry James Walker of Winnfield, Richard Elmer Walker of Pollock, and John E. Walker of Baton Rouge; seven grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.
