All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: February 8, 1934 Winn Parish Enterprise Funeral Services For John Wasson Held At Gansville Life-Long Resident Winn Parish Dies in New Orleans Funeral services for John William Wasson, 72 years and 2 months old, who died in a New Orleans sanitarium, Wednesday afternoon, February 7, 1934, were held at Gansville Baptist Church, Thursday afternoon. Interment was in a Gansville cemetery. Rev. B. C. Land, pastor Winnfield Baptist Church, and Rev. Alwin Stokes, pastor Presbyterian Church, had charge of the services. John William Wasson was born November 27, 1861, at Gansville, the son of John Mills Wasson and Sara Wasson who were among the earliest settlers of Winn Parish. On February 5, 1885 he married Mae McBride, a member of a prominent family. In the year 1900 they moved to Winnfield with their children. He was bereaved of his wife in several years and is survived by ten children of this marriage. In later years he married to Miss Emily Shelton of Winnfield and to this union two children were born. His second wife and one child of this marriage preceded him in death. Mr. Wasson was always in public life, taking an active part in parish affairs. He began his career, first serving as police jury member from Ward Four. Later he was president of the parish body. From 1900 to 1908 he served as parish treasurer for eight years. After that time he was clerk of the Town of Winnfield for seven years. He was justice of the peace up until the time his health failed. He was a member of the Baptist Church, W. O. W., and Knights of Pythias. For the past three years he has made his home in Vivian and Bossier City, returning to his family home here in August. Surviving are the following sons and daughters: Mrs. Taylor Finlay and Shelton Wasson, Winnfield; Clayton C. Wasson, Vivian; Mrs. E. R. Norris, Thibodeaux, La.; Laura D. Henderson, Lopac, Calif.; Mrs. M. L. Meadow, Olla, La.; Mrs. S. E. Norris, Bossier City, La.; Mack Wasson, Cleveland, Tenn.; Herbert Wasson, Marion, La.; George Wasson, Sikes CCC Camp. Three sisters and two brothers also survive. They are: Mrs. A. L. Mixon and Mrs. J. T. Haigler, Dodson; Mrs. Oren Sholars, Garland City; A. J. Wasson, Natchez, Miss., and S. E. Wasson, Monroe, La.
