John W. Wasson, 72, Pioneer Citizen Is Claimed By Death

Services Held Thursday Afternoon At Gansville, Former Home

John William Wasson, pioneer citizen of Winn Parish, died Wednesday following
an operation in a New Orleans hospital.  Funeral services were held Thursday
afternoon at two-thirty o'clock at the church at Gansville, and interment made
in the old family cemetery there, conducted by Dr. B. C. Land, pastor of the
First Baptist Church and Rev. Alwin Stokes, pastor of the First Presbyterian
Church both of Winnfield.

Mr. Wasson was born at Gansville November 27, 1861.  He was educated in the
schools of Winn Parish and Louisiana and later taught in the public schools
for a number of years.  During his residence at Gansville he was elected
police juror from Ward 4 which office he held for eight years serving during
that time as president of that body.

From 1900 to 1908 he served as parish treasurer and from 1915 to 1922 as clerk
of the Town of Winnfield, having moved to Winnfield during his term as parish
treasurer.  Following his retirement as town clerk he became justice of the
peace which office he held until forced from public life by ill health.  

He was twice married, the first time to Miss Mary McBride, who died April 6,
1910 and the second time to Miss Emily Shelton, who preceded him in death more
than three years.

The deceased is survived by eleven children, Mrs. Ida Finlay and George and
Shelton Wasson of Winnfield, C. C. Wasson, Vivian, Mrs. E. R. Norgress,
Thibodeaux, Mrs. David Henderson, Lompac, Calif., Mrs. M. L. Meador, Olla,
Mrs. Eula Ford, Colfax, Mrs. Steve Norris, Bossier City, McBride Wasson,
Cleveland, Tenn., Herbert M. Wasson, Marion; three sisters, Mrs. J. T.
Haigler, Mrs. Alfred Mixon, Dodson, and Mrs. Iron Sholars, Garland City, Ark.;
three brothers, C. H. Wasson, Los Angeles, Calif., A. J. Wasson, Natchez,
Miss., and S. E. Wasson, Monroe.
