Watts, Sr. J. R. Watts, Sr., age 63 years, died at his home in Winnfield last Thursday night of heart failure. Mr. Watts was at his store Thursday but complained in the afternoon of not feeling well. He retired at his usual hour Thursday night and when Mrs. Watts called him Friday morning she found that he had died during the night. Mr. Watts was born September 1, 1862 in Claiborne Parish near Homer. He married Miss Mary Timnah Averett in 1883 and joined the M. E. Church when he was 21 years old. He moved to Winnfield many years ago and had been a member of the official board of the M. E. Church for the past seventeen years and was known throughout the Louisiana Conference as one of the strongest members of the Congregation. He was also prominent in the local school affairs, having served on the local board for a number of years. Mr. Watts is survived by his wife and eight children: J. R. Watts, Jr., Winnfield; Mrs. W. J. Jackson, Ashland; Mrs. R. H. Rushing, Alexandria; A. J. Watts, Camden, Ark.; Prentice Watts, Kenneth Watts, Misses Velma Lee and Edith Watts, of Winnfield. As a testimonial to the esteem in which he was held in the community all the business houses were closed at the time of the funeral services which were held Saturday and a large crowd attended the services to pay their respects. Interment was in the Winnfield Cemetery, Rev. P. M. Caraway, assisted by Rev. W. H. Jordan of Monroe and Rev. L. P. Moreland of Jena, officiating. Out of town relatives and friends attending the funeral of Mr. Watts were: Mrs. Mary Lewis, Glenmora; Mr. and Mrs. O. W. Lewis, Shreveport; Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Averett, Shreveport; Mrs. T. A. Wafer, Coushatta; Mrs. J. C. Watts, Saline; Mr. D. D. Watts, Saline; Mr. Melvin Dyson, Saline; Mrs. W. J. Rodgers, Saline; Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Stamper, Natchitoches; Mrs. C. E. Sompayrac, Natchitoches; Mrs. J. J. Mixon, Natchitoches, Mrs. D. E. Averett, Gilmer, Texas; Mr. J. R. Averett, Hallville, Texas; Rev. W. H. Jordan, Monroe; Rev. L. P. Moreland and family, Jena; Dr. O. L. Kidd and mother of Gibsland.
