L. Waters of Dodson, aged 66 years, 5 months, and 17 days, died March 18, 1934, in the Tri-State sanitarium, Shreveport, following an emergency operation. He had been in the Jonesboro sanitarium several weeks prior to this time but had improved enough to return to his home. His death was a shock to the entire parish, over which he was widely known for his genial disposition, business ability, and the assistance he gave to those in need. Mr. Waters, at the time of his death, was serving as police jury member from Ward Seven, and as a member of the parish cotton acreage rental committee. He was a former member of the parish school board and he has been connected in the timber business in Winn Parish since his early youth, engaged in buying and selling ties. At one time he was employed by the Tremont and Gulf, but for the past many years with the Rock Island Railroad. He conducted a mercantile business at Dodson, dealt in ties, and owned and managed a plantation near Dodson. He was a leader in his community and parish, both in business and civic affairs, and it was said of him by both white and negroes, "when people are in trouble, they go to Mr. Waters." Julius L. Waters was born October 1, 1867 in the Hudson Community. He married Miss Lucretia V. Dickinson of Hudson, December 22, 1892, and to this union four daughters and three sons were born. He is survived by his widow; four daughters, Mrs. Clayton Taylor, Winnfield; Mrs. McHenry Greer, Winnsboro; Mrs. Dewey Simmons, Monroe; and Mrs. Victor Scott, Jonesboro; two sons, Harvey J. and Guy Waters, Dodson; two brothers, W. E. Waters, Oak Grove and J. R. Waters, Hudson; and twelve grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at the M. P. Church, Dodson, at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning, with the pastor, Rev. Edwin H. Grant, of Grayson, in charge. Others assisting in the services were: Rev. H. B. Hysell, Jonesboro; Rev. I. A. Patton, Monroe; and Rev. Shows of Pollock. A large crowd of friends attended and the honorary pallbearers were E. C. Willis, Matt Milam, Jesse Temple, J. B. Milam, Sr., Kenneth Watts, C. L. Greene, C. L. Dark, R. W. Brewer, Carl Kemmerly, W. D. Temple, M. L. Wyatt, J. G. Canterbury, R. E. Dear, W. C. Anders, and J. G. Smith. Active pallbearers were L. J. Stovall, W. J. Pyburn, A. L. Mixon, Bryant Sholars, C. F. Walsworth, and B. L. Anderson. Police Jury Has Memorial Services For Deceased Member A memorial service for J. L. Waters, police jury member from Ward Seven, was held by the board at their meeting Thursday morning. B. F. Allbritton conducted the ceremonies, which consisted of prayer and an eulogy. A Resolution of Respect was passed and will be published next week.
