All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: December 27, 1962 Winn Parish Enterprise News-American Benny Weeks of Calvin Winn Resident Dies In Gunshot Accident Benny Dale Weeks, 19, of near Calvin, died Wednesday night from an accidental gunshot wound inflicted when a rifle discharged as he removed it for a car. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Weeks of near Calvin (Rt. 1, Goldonna). Authorities said the victim and his brother, Arlin, were preparing to drive from their parents' home to Calvin about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. Arlin already had entered the car and Benny reached into another car to get the rifle, a 25-20 lever action rifle. There were several hunting parties out along the road looking for deer, and the men decided to take the rifle along inn case they saw a deer, Sheriff's officials explained. The hammer of the rifle apparently caught on something an caused it to fire, one official said. The family rushed the injured youth to a hospital in Winnfield where he was given emergency treatment and transferred to Shreveport by ambulance. Dep. Edwin Kelley of the Winn Parish Sheriff's Department, who escorted the ambulance to the hospital, said the young man died about 7:15, a few minutes after arriving at the hospital in Shreveport. He was a graduate of Goldonna High School in 1961. Burial will be in the church cemetery under direction of Southern Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Bethlehem Baptist Church with the Rev. Mr. Flurry of Natchitoches officiating. Other survivors include his twin sister, Mrs. Betty Elliott, Campti; two other sisters, Mrs. Carline Hinds, Odessa, Tex., Mrs. Linda Abels, Bossier City; and his grandmother, Mrs. C. B. Carter, Calvin.
