Wheat, originally of Rochelle, La., was an accidental drown victim at Fishville, La., last Sunday when he and two other local youngsters, Lee Roy Rogers and Willis Brown, were swimming near the shoreline of Fish Creek. All three boys were picnicing and swimming at the resort. Sunday Young Wheat was first missed, it was reported, about 4 p.m. Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Rogers, parents of Lee Roy, who accompanied the boys, summoned aid and sent for the Wheat family, it was said; but a swift current and high water returned futile search effort all that night and the next morning. The body was recovered around Monday noon. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at the Winnfeld First Baptist Church. The Rev. H. H. McBride, Winnfield pastor, gave the message, assisted by the Rev. Alwin Stokes of the local Presbyterian Church, the Rev. L. A. Smith of the Pollock Baptist Church, and the Rev. H. L. Stephens, visiting evangelist from Toronto, Canada. Burial services and interment took place at Zion Church Cemetery nine miles south of Winnfield. Willis Brown, and Boy Scounts Lee Roy Rogers, Sammy Parker, Hal Earle, Donald Purser, and Carlos Welch were pall bearers at the funeral. Survivors include Mr. and Mrs. Wheat, James Maxwell Wheat, 13, and John Wheat, 8. With the past seven years five have lost their lives in the same place where young Wheat was drowned.
