WINNER: From Meridian, Miss., April 21 MARKS WINNER, senior member of the firm of Winner, Klein, & Co. of this city died this morning at 9:10 o'clock, following a brief illness. Mr. Winner was one of the most prominent businessmen of the state, having been engaged in the mercantile business in Meridian since 1872. He started in a small way and now leaves behind him a fortune estimated at half a million dollars. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock. From Montgomery, La., note of April 25, 1910: I herewith enclose you notice of Marks Winner's death, published by THE STATES, as Mr. Winner was a member of Winn Rifles, Co. C, 3rd Regiment, from this parish {Winn}--one of the first companies from Winn. Comrade Winner made a good soldier. He was captured at Snyder's Bluff, Miss. and made a prisoner, and remained in prison until surrender. Yours truly, J. M. McCain. Marks Winner was Jewish and at one time just prior to or just following the War For Southern Independence, owned a store at Wheeling, Winn Parish, LA. Winner was a Mason and member of Montgomery Masonic Lodge No. 168, F. & A. M. His time as a prisoner of war consisted of stays at various prisons in Tennessee, Delaware, Virginia, and Maryland. The author of the obituary, J. Matt McCain was a parish leader and served in several political positions including state representative for Winn Parish.
