Wood, formerly of Winnfield and still remembered by many old friends and relatives here, died at the hospital in Robstown, Texas on Friday night, October 22, 1976. His sisters, Misses Janie and Ruth Wood, with a niece, Mrs. W. E. Stewart of Indianola, Miss., left early Monday morning to attend the funeral services on Monday afternoon. Mr. Wood was born January 19, 1900 in Atlanta, Texas. He died in the bicentennial year at the age of 76. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Wood, for many years residents of Winnfield. Herman, with his brothers Vernon and Harold, were members of the Coach Alwin Stokes championship football team, which won many high school games. Later, Herman also played for Centenary, where he was a student, and Harold played for Louisiana Tech. Sometimes the brothers played against each other. Some years later, Herman moved with his family to the valley, where he and his father engaged in the grocery business in Mercedes and Pharr. Some years later, they removed to Norfolk, Virginia, where they joined the younger brother, Louis, in the lumber business. Meanwhile, Herman had married Miss Era harper of Robstown and they decided to settled there, near Corpus Christi. He and his wife were members of the First United Methodist Church where the funeral services were held. Miss Lowice Teddlie, who graduated in the same high school class with Herman, recalls the happy times their group of young people used to have at the C. R. Wood home, singing together, playing tennis, swimming in the nearby pond and riding the horses which the Woods always had available. Mr. Wood is survived by his widow, one daughter, Mrs. S. C. Ward of Houston, one brother, Harold Wood of Uvalde, Misses Janie and Ruth Wood, the sisters who live here, several nieces and many cousins.
