R. Wood, 77, Sunday Afternoon Prominent Former Local Businessman Succumbs Saturday Funeral services were held in the First Methodist Church Sunday at 2:30 p.m. for C. R. Wood, 78, retired merchant and lumber man who died in a local hospital early Saturday following a lengthy illness. Rites were conducted by the Rev. Fred S. Flurry, assisted by the Rev. Alwin Stokes, and the Rev. George L. Paris, Natchitoches, and interment was in the Winnfield Cemetery under the direction of Hixon Brothers Funeral Home. A brief prayer service was conducted in the funeral chapel prior to the services. Pallbearers were R. D. Bevill, Jr., Shirley G. Jackson, Jack Oglesby, Frank L. Shaw, Jr., Dudley P. Shell, and W. D. Walker. Born in Springdale, Texas, March 3, 1871, Mr. Wood was married on November 24, 1897 to the former Ira Cole, a teacher in the Springdale school and a native of Atlanta, Texas, where the wedding was solemnized. They moved to Winnfield in 1905 and he became one of the leading merchants and business men here, constructing the brick building now occupied by Grigsby's Grocery and the Winn Dry Goods Store, where he operated a grocery store. In 1921 the family moved back to Texas, settling in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, where they resided until 1935, and then moved to Norfolk, Va., where Mr. Wood was engaged in the lumber business. He retired in 1942 and the family moved to Winnfield in 1943 to establish the family residence here. Mr. Wood is survived by four sons, Vernon of Norfolk, Herman of Robstown, Texas, Harold of Uvalde, Texas, and Louis of Shreveport; two daughters, Janie and Ruth Wood of Winnfield, and five granddaughters. In addition to being a merchant, business man and lumber man, Mr. Wood was well known as an ardent hunter and fisherman, a lover of animals and his fellow man, and an enthusiastic grower of flowers.
