Wood, succumbed at her home here late Monday afternoon following a stroke of apoplexy, which she suffered at 9:30 in the morning. She was stricken as she entered the home of one of her neighbors, Mrs. P. K. Abel, who lives across the street from the Wood residence. Soon after being carried to her home she lapsed into a coma and never regained consciousness. Her death was a distinct shock to the entire town, where she has resided for the past thirty years, taking an active part in both civic and religious affairs. Her husband, the late James T. Wood, was a prominent Winnfield merchant and lumberman and passed away last December 12. Mrs. Wood was the daughter of the late Calvin Croom and Margaret Mooring. Her parents first settled in Mooringsport and were prominent in the affairs of Caddo Parish. She was the youngest of six children and the last of the line to die. She was a loyal member of the First Methodist Church here, was active in the Sunday School and was responsible for the organization of the Winnfield Orphanage Circle, which supports a child in the Methodist Orphanage at Ruston, in addition to making financial gifts to the orphanage. Funeral services were conducted at the First Methodist Church Wednesday afternoon at 4 o'clock with the following ministers in charge: Rev. Ellis Smith, pastor local church, Rev. R. W. Vaughn, superintendent Methodist Orphanage of Ruston, and Rev. W. E. Joyner, pastor Alexandria Methodist Church. A large concourse of relatives and friends attended the last rites. Pallbearers were Roy Morgan, Robert Heard, Willie Verne Hall, Malvern Dickerson, Dudley Shell, Prentice Tannehill, Shelby Walsh, and Wayne Bethea. The deceased is survived by one son, Charlie Wood of El Paso, Texas, and one daughter, Mrs. H. J. Powers of Alexandria; and three grandsons, Henry James, Richard Earl, and George Powers, of Alexandria.
