Back of photo reads: "J. A. French and Family at Old Scotland, Arkansas and mule team", probably taken about 1900 or 1901. James Austin French was born 28 Aug 1871 in Ohio and died 13 Oct 1906 Wyatt, Winn, LA. He is buried in the Siloam Cemetery in Winn Parish (see Woodmen of the World tombstone below). He was the son of Austin French b. 1841 in Ohio, and Martha Jane Landrum b. about 1848 in Ohio. James married Cynthia Ann (Annie) Gates b. 10 Oct 1874 in Brown Co, IN. She died 10 May 1934 in El Dorado, Union, AR. After J.A. died she married a Barker, probably in Winn Parish, but was a widow again in 1910. The French children are Dewey David French, born 26 Nov 1898, and in the buggy is Roy (Lanflon?) French, born 15 May 1899/1900, died 10 Apr 1908, probably in Winn Parish, LA. The mule team drivers are Landy Gates, Charlie Thomas, Pick Brody. The little girls belong to Pic. Not sure who the other driver is. Submitter would love to hear from anyone who knows more about any of these families.
